Review: The Innocents (Bruno Johnson Series Book #5) by David Putnam
Summary & Review:
Newly hired LA County Sheriff Violent Crimes agent Bruno Johnson gets the worst job possible: he has to infiltrate a Sheriff’s drug team that might be involved in murder for hire. Get them to trust you and join the plan. If he wins, he will have to arrest and blame his fellow cops, if he makes it that long.
It gets even worse: Bruno answers the door on the first day of this assignment to find an ex-girlfriend there before he goes for work. She hands him a baby girl who is only a few weeks old and doesn’t say anything. He has the child. He is shocked and scared, and he now has to become a father right away while also being accused of being a spy for trying to bring down his coworkers.
Even though Bruno has a lot going on at home, he takes on his job and finds that no one is who they seem to be and that his boss, Lieutenant Wicks, may be involved. His job gets harder when a beautiful female deputy who was just moved from Public Affairs is put on the case as well. She has never been out on the street before, and Bruno has to watch her back, which is already a tough job made even harder by their feelings for each other.
Bruno‘s secret mission doesn’t go so well because he’s working with some violent coworkers and there seems to be violence all the time. The team seems to be full of people who are dishonest, sneaky, and lying, but he is mature enough to deal with some very tough problems and make progress on what looks like an ever-moving goal. He doesn’t know who to trust, but the good guy(s) make it out alive in the end.
