Hard Girls was a spy thriller, a cat-and-mouse thriller, and a story about a family that doesn’t work well together. It was sometimes hard to understand how to mix all of these things.

Hard Girls Mystery & Thriller Novel by J. Robert Lennon
Summary & Review:
Jane Pool is happy with her safe life in the suburbs. She owns a home, has a family (including an annoying mother-in-law), and works as an administrator at a nearby college. The job is quiet but could be better. Everything is so perfectly normal it hurts. But Jane is still troubled by her unstable and absent mother, the secrets her parents kept from her, and the violent act that changed her life.
When Jane‘s estranged twin sister Lila contacts her, she knows where their mother is and why she left all those years ago. Jane agrees to go with Lila because she needs answers and wants to get back in touch with the only person who really knows who she is. The hunt gets dangerous, though, and pulls the two women to the farthest corners of the earth. There, they face their mother’s trickery and the darkness that has always followed them. Jane could lose the life she’s built for the one she can’t get away from.
My first thought about Hard Girls by J. Robert Lennon is definitely one that I will remember. The woman on the book’s cover, who isn’t named, is very pretty. How she looks at the viewer with hot eyes is directly confrontational; she’s a femme fatale.
I couldn’t stop staring at her because she was so interesting. I wondered who she was and what secrets she might be keeping. It makes sense that I was eager to start the book! I also enjoy the design a great deal. The oversaturation and choice of contrasting colors look good and give the picture a vintage look.
Audiobook narrator Amanda Troope narrates the version of the book that I purchased. She did a great job giving the characters voices that made them stand out and easily recognized. She talks quickly and is fun to listen to. I could read the book and lose myself in the story for hours on end.
While I enjoyed the story a lot, I sometimes found it tedious because of unimportant details. The same thing happened to me with the background information of the people and the places they saw on the chase. It was also important to me that the writing had a stronger sense of urgency to better reflect how I think the girls feel: like they’re losing control but can’t return.
Overall, this was a good story and a fun read, so thriller fans should definitely check it out! I felt more connected to the girls and understood some of their more shocking choices better because I have an identical twin. I will always choose my twin over anyone or anything else.
