Review: Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang
Summary & Review:
Valentina Tran got her name from LOVE, which was her favorite holiday as a child. But when Val finds out the truth about her parents’ breakup and why she is being raised by a single dad, she understands that love is not real.
When she meets the ghost of Saint Valentine, he tells her that she and her family will always have bad luck with love. Val is ready to give up on her life until a strange lion dancer gives her a paper heart at a Lunar New Year festival. ZING! Val is determined to change her fate, show Saint Valentine that he was wrong, and give her heart to the right person.
Jae, on the other hand, has only found peace in lion dancing since his dad died. Keeping in touch with his dad’s side of the family is another reason. At the Lunar New Year festival, both Jae and his cousin Leslie notice Val. For some reason, Jae gives Val a paper heart.
But Leslie, who looks great in K-pop, is the one who starts dating Val. Jae still has this bond with Val that he thinks has something to do with how he feels about losing his dad.
