Australia has named its 14-man squads for the upcoming T20 and ODI series against South Africa. All-rounder Mitch Owen has been called up for his first ODI. The white-ball series will start on August 10 and take place in Darwin, Cairns, and Mackay.

Marsh to Lead, Key Players Return

Pat Cummins is resting, along with fellow pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, in preparation for a busy summer at home. In the meantime, Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead both the T20 and ODI teams.

Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, two star players who were rested during the recent tour of the West Indies, are back, which fans are very excited about. Adding them makes both the batting and bowling departments much stronger.

George Bailey, the chair of the selectors, talked about how the choices were made with the next T20 World Cup in mind.

Bailey said:

“As we get ready for the T20 World Cup, the West Indies’ flexibility and depth, beyond just the obvious results, has been a huge plus. It was great to see how flexible the batting order was and how bowlers could bowl at different times during the innings.”

New Talent in the Spotlight

Mitch Owen is the most notable choice. He earned a spot on his first ODI squad after a breakout T20 series against the West Indies. The Tasmanian all-rounder hit hard down the order and will try to keep that up in the 50-over format.

Bailey also said:

“Mitch Owen and Matt Kuhnemann making their debuts and Nathan Ellis’s preparation and work that let him play all five matches were highlights.”

Some other important choices are:

  • Matthew Short Comes back to both teams after healing from a side strain.
  • Lance Morris is back in the ODI squad for the first time since playing against Pakistan in late 2024.
  • Xavier Bartlett is still on his way up in the national setup, as he is now part of the ODI squad.
